At Vinings Massage & Wellness, we are always looking for ways to improve our services and provide the best possible care for our clients. That’s why we are excited to announce that some of our massage therapists will be participating in a comprehensive oncology massage training program offered by Oncology Massage of the Carolinas!
Why is it Important to Work with a Trained Oncology Massage Therapist?
Oncology massage is a specialized massage modality that is tailored to the needs of people who are undergoing cancer treatment and/or have a history of cancer treatment. It is extremely helpful for clients who will have long-term effects from their cancer treatment journey.
However, not every massage therapist is qualified to offer oncology massage. Some massage techniques can be harmful, uncomfortable, and dangerous for people with certain cancer-related symptoms.
It is common for large national massage therapy chains to accept or encourage cancer survivors or patients to schedule massages. However, massage therapists who do not have the proper training can unfortunately cause more harm than good. Oftentimes the client will not be treated by someone who knows the side effects of cancer treatment and contraindications for that population. That’s why it is important to find a massage therapist who has received proper training in oncology massage.
What Will Our Therapists Learn in the Upcoming Oncology Massage Training Program?
The training program offered by Oncology Massage of the Carolinas will provide both classroom and hands-on practice. Additionally, it will address key areas like:
- How to modify a massage for the safety and comfort of a cancer patient
- The best practices and protocols for oncology massage
- Late-term effects of treatment a client could be experiencing and what that means for the therapist
- Considerations to make for clients depending on what stage they’re in (i.e. before treatment, during, or after)
The program also includes supervised clinical practice sessions where our therapists will have the opportunity to apply their learning and provide oncology massage to actual clients with cancer or cancer histories. This will allow them to gain valuable experience and feedback from their instructors and clients.
How Will This Benefit Our Clients at Vinings Massage & Wellness?
By participating in this training program, our ultimate goal is to invest these efforts back into our clients, including our hospital partners. We want to provide you with the best possible care whether we see you in the infusion center, as an inpatient, or at our office in Vinings. By continuously participating in continued education, years of hands-on experience, and practical experience and sponsoring our massage therapists to continue their training, we can continue to provide a higher quality of care for our clients.
