“Never cut down a tree in the wintertime. Never make a negative decision in the low time. Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring will come.”
~ Robert H Schuller
The Winter Blues, also known, oddly enough, as “SAD” (Seasonal Affective Disorder) or Winter Depression… Call it what you like, but for the people who suffer from it, it can be very daunting.
As the cold weather rolls through, we have a natural tendency to want to hibernate with a decrease in energy, an increase in appetite, and a lessened desire to socialize. In order to not allow this condition to take over completely and affect our heath and lifestyle, it is important to find ways to beat it. These are just a few natural tips.
Find the Light!
Many people who suffer from the Winter Blues have been found to have an increased sensitivity to light or the lack of it. With the shorter days and decrease in sunlight during the winter, there’s little wonder as to why they are feeling “SAD.” Try replacing the lost sunlight with bright artificial light. Even better, when those rare, sunny winter days come around, take full advantage of them – go for a walk/run or take your yoga practice outside!
Bring Some Green Inside!
Placing fresh flowers and plants around the home can help us maintain the connection with nature that we are craving before the Spring arrives.
Massage the Blues Away
Massage therapy increases the body’s circulation while increasing the production of the hormones and chemicals in the body which fight depression and anxiety, and promote happiness.
Be patient sunshine seekers… Spring will be here before you know it!
